Ann-801-910-4897 Information we have found on the Lithograph From the Post Bulletin News "Drawing on the Beatles' Popularity" December 16, 1993 05:00 AM LOS ANGELES -- Tom Wilkes is about to reach the end of a long and winding road. For more than a quarter-century, the resident of Topanga Canyon, a community northwest of Los Angeles, held onto what is believed to be the only piece of visual art ever created by all four Beatles. The former graphics designer said he always planned to use the piece to raise money for charity, but Apple Corp., the Beatles' longtime record company, originally challenged his right to do so. With that dispute behind him now, Wilkes plans to release a limited-edition lithograph based on the artwork, which the Fab Four created for the Monterey International Pop Festival in 1967. A run of 1,000 lithographs, being shown in Los Angeles on Thursday today, bears a psychedelic design in bright colors. ``It's really primitive and all, but it's a window into that time,'' said Wilkes, founder of the marketing company Planet Gear and the nonprofit group Project Interspeak. ``It definitely reflects that era.'' Certainly a blast from the past, the drawing in felt markers and colored pencils bears the messages ``Peace to Monterey from Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band,'' ``Loving You,'' and, in an oddly forward-looking twist, ``It happened in Monterey a long time ago.'' It is signed John, Paul, George and, in what an expert attributes to a bout of silliness, Harold. The lithographs also were shown in New York this week and will be sold for $10,000 each through mail order from Planet Gear in Malibu, Calif., and eventually in some art galleries. ``Then the plates will be destroyed and that's that,'' Wilkes said. Wilkes is the first in what will surely be a long string of entrepreneurs to capitalize on the 30th anniversary of the Beatles' arrival in the United States. On Feb. 7, it will have been that long since the boys from Liverpool took by storm the country that was mourning the assassination of President Kennedy. But the former art director at A&M; Records who went on to found his own rock graphics firm, Camouflage Productions, maintained that his effort transcends crass commercialism since he plans to give 20 percent of proceeds to charity. Beneficiaries include the nonprofit groups Action Center for Human Rights, International Society for the Preservation of the Tropical Rainforest, Land &; Water Resources International and the Natural Resources Defense Council. Martin Lewis, a noted Beatles expert who serves as master of ceremonies at annual Beatlefests in Chicago, New York and Los Angeles, is convinced of the drawing's authenticity. ``John, Paul and George are authentic to my eye,'' he said of the signatures. ``I'm not a handwriting expert but I have a lot of other examples of their signatures.'' He saw nothing particularly discrediting about the Harold signature, although he could not say whether it was in Ringo's handwriting. ``That's nothing other than dry British humor,'' he said. ``They were just putting some other silly name. It's done by the Beatles. There's no shadow of a doubt.'' The existence of what Wilkes is calling ``the Dead Sea Scrolls of Rock and Roll'' may surprise die-hard Beatle fans, who may recall that John, Paul, George and Ringo didn't perform along with a laundry list of rock greats at the three-day musical gathering, which predated the monumental rock festival in Woodstock, New York. Having given their final live performance in San Francisco's Candlestick Park the previous summer, the Beatles sat out the Monterey event that attracted The Who, the Mamas and the Papas, Simon &; Garfunkel, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and the Grateful Dead. But Michelle Phillips of the Mamas and Papas approached the band about submitting a drawing for the 60-page souvenir program to be sold at the event. Wilkes said the band received the request in February 1967 and saw it as an opportunity to publicize the album on which it was working -- ``Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.'' ``It was a triumphant page, very `psychedelic,' '' former Beatles publicist Derek Taylor wrote in his limited-edition 1984 book ``Fifty Years Adrift.'' Wilkes, who was trying to make inroads into the music business, agreed to produce the program ``for a small amount of money'' in exchange for the right to keep the artwork that went into it, he said. Wilkes said he was concerned only with retaining control of his own artwork. ``I had been in advertising and I wanted to get involved in the music business and I needed a portfolio,'' said Wilkes, whose went on to design such historic albums as Harrison's `Concert for Bangla Desh,' Joplin's `Pearl'' and the Who's `Tommy, the Rock Opera.''' But over time, the Beatles piece, the value of which has been estimated at $4 million, emerged as the significant keepsake from the job. ``I always planned to use the drawing to raise funds for a charitable cause,'' Wilkes said. He plans to give 20 percent of proceeds to charity. Beneficiaries include the nonprofit groups Action Center for Human Rights, International Society for the Preservation of the Tropical Rainforest, Land &; Water Resources International and the Natural Resources Defense Council. But Apple Corp filed a suit challenging Wilkes' ownership of the drawing when he first disclosed plans to reproduce it in 1990. He said he has since reached a settlement with the company over the drawing that he characterizes as unique. ``I've never seen another one, and that's the reason they wanted it back,'' Wilkes said. ``There's not another one.'' Meg Sullivan Los Angeles Daily NewsA@et Our client and her son's recollection of the lithographs are as follows.... In the mid 90s, Tom Wilkes was the art director for Planet Gear in San Francisco. He owned the rights to "our" piece of art which he used for a variety of posters. Apple Music had the rights to the Beatles estate (a little fuzzy on the details on this) and they took Wilkes to court saying they owned the rights to his original piece of art and the use of the art for other purposes. Apple lost the case which is where our clients late husband and his firm enter the picture to use the art for merchandise opportunities, such as t-shirts, hats, etc. They think that what we have is probably an artist proof (higher quality rendering) used for merchandise development and then used for the x1000 lithograph run.
